POP-SUI Registry
The POP‑SUI outcome registry programme has been established by NHS England to address long‑standing concerns about the safety, effectiveness and patient outcomes associated with pelvic floor procedures, particularly those that require mesh, as highlighted in the 2020 Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Review (the Cumberlege report). The report identified significant gaps in the systematic collection of outcomes data, lack of transparency, and limited ability to track complications or compare different treatment options over time. In response, it recommended the creation of a mandatory, national registry covering all pelvic mesh procedures and their non‑mesh comparators to ensure comprehensive, standardised data capture.
The POP‑SUI registry therefore aims to support improved patient safety, informed consent, and clinical decision‑making by enabling robust, longitudinal monitoring of outcomes, facilitating audit and research, and provide a mechanism for early identification of adverse trends across all surgical treatments for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
